Measure the opening. We’ll help with the fit.
Use calipers or a ruler and record the units. Choose the opening below, measure the actual hole and note anything that could affect the fixing. You can submit millimeters or inches in the studio; a photo is helpful context, but it does not replace measurements.
Opening size, cover size and overlap.
The opening is the empty hole. The cover is the complete piece we make. Overlap is the part that extends past the hole onto the surrounding surface. For a rectangular opening, cover width equals opening width plus left and right overlap; cover height equals opening height plus top and bottom overlap.
Example: a 100 × 80 mm opening with 10 mm overlap on all sides needs a 120 × 100 mm outer cover. Do not subtract a guessed fitting allowance. Send the actual measurements so we can review clearance in the proof. For a pocket or insert, measure the available space separately.
I know the finished cover size
Enter the outside dimensions of the complete cover, including any overlap. These are not the dimensions of the hole. For a cover made in pieces, enter its full assembled size.
- A. Finished cover width
- Total left-to-right size of the complete cover.
- B. Finished cover length
- Total top-to-bottom size of the complete cover.
- C. Cover thickness
- Thickness of the printed cover. We review suitability before making it.
- Enter the finished outside size, not the hole size. Do not add overlap again.
- Tell us if the cover needs to be printed in separate pieces, and describe the seam or fixing in the notes.
- Confirm that the cover will overlap the hole and that its screw positions have suitable support. We will review the final design with you.
Wall opening
Measure the empty hole, then choose how far the grate should overlap the wall around it.
- A. Clear opening width
- Across the empty hole, left to right.
- B. Clear opening height
- Across the empty hole, top to bottom.
- C. Overlap on each side
- How far you want the grate to extend past the hole onto the surrounding surface on each side. For example, a 100 mm opening with 10 mm overlap needs a 120 mm cover. Check that there is room for your chosen overlap.
- Face the opening straight on. Measure the empty hole, not an old cover.
- Choose how far the grate should overlap the wall on each side. Check that there is enough space; tell us in the notes if you need different overlaps on different sides.
- Tell us how you would like it secured. We will review the fixing before making it.
Recessed floor
A recess is a lowered pocket. A ledge is the little rim inside it that the cover rests on.
- A. Pocket width
- Across the full lowered pocket, left to right.
- B. Pocket length
- Across the full lowered pocket, front to back.
- C. Clear hole width
- The open hole inside the supporting rim.
- D. Clear hole length
- The open hole inside the rim, front to back.
- E. Supporting ledge width
- The narrowest part of the rim that supports the cover.
- F. Pocket depth
- From the finished floor surface down to the top of the supporting rim.
- Measure the full pocket and the clear hole inside it.
- Measure the narrowest supporting rim and the drop from floor level to that rim.
- Tell us whether people could step on the cover. Suitability needs review before use.
Over an opening
For a cover that sits on the surface and overlaps the hole, rather than fitting in a pocket.
- A. Clear opening width
- Width of the empty hole.
- B. Clear opening height
- Height of the empty hole.
- C. Desired cover width
- The total width you want, including overlap on both sides.
- D. Desired cover height
- The total height you want, including overlap above and below.
- Measure the empty opening.
- Measure the total space available for a cover. Choose an outer size that overlaps every edge.
- Check that trim, handles and adjacent surfaces will not get in the way.
Pipe end
Measure across the pipe, through its center. The inside and outside measurements are different.
- A. Inside diameter
- Across the clear hole from inside edge to inside edge.
- B. Outside diameter
- Across the entire pipe, including both sides of the pipe wall.
- Measure the clear inside diameter in two directions. Note any difference.
- Measure the outside diameter. We calculate the pipe wall thickness from these two measurements.
- Choose whether the opening faces up, sideways or down, and describe how the cover should sit.
Exterior opening
For an opening on an outside wall. Tell us about rain, sun and the surface the cover will attach to.
- A. Clear opening width
- Width of the empty opening.
- B. Clear opening height
- Height of the empty opening.
- C. Overlap on each side
- How far you want the grate to extend past the hole onto the surrounding surface on each side. Check that trim or other obstacles leave enough room.
- D. Existing hole spacing: across (optional)
- Optional: center to center between existing fixing holes.
- E. Existing hole spacing: down (optional)
- Optional: center to center between existing fixing holes.
- Measure the empty opening, then choose how far the grate should overlap the surrounding surface on each side.
- If reusing fixing holes, measure between their centers across and down. Otherwise leave these blank.
- Describe the wall material and exposure. We will review the material and fixing for your setting.
Cabinet or furniture
Measure the cutout and the thickness of the panel, so we can review how the cover will attach.
- A. Cutout width
- Across the empty cutout.
- B. Cutout height
- Top to bottom of the cutout.
- C. Panel thickness
- Through the wood or panel at the cut edge.
- D. Overlap on each side (optional)
- Optional: how far you want the grate to extend past the cutout onto the panel on each side.
- Measure the cutout, not the cabinet door as a whole.
- Measure the panel thickness at an accessible edge.
- Note shelves, hinges or cables behind the opening that could interfere with a fixing.
Something different
For an irregular shape, start with its widest and tallest points. Describe curves, corners and anything unusual.
- A. Widest opening dimension
- The maximum left-to-right span.
- B. Tallest opening dimension
- The maximum top-to-bottom span.
- Measure the maximum width and height.
- Describe the outline and any important smaller dimensions in the notes.
- Attach a drawing or template in the final request step if useful. We will review the exact outline with you.
Before you send it.
- Check width and height at more than one point. Note any variation or an out-of-round pipe.
- Tell us which way the opening faces and how the cover should attach.
- Describe sun, rain, heat, foot traffic, airflow and nearby obstructions.
- Attach a dimensioned drawing for irregular outlines or unequal overlaps.
